Our Expertise for Water Metering
Water Metering Solution — End-to-End IoT Ecosystem
Full-stack industrial IoT solution for water utilities: sensors, controllers and cloud platform from a single EU manufacturer.
VAD Water Metering Solution is a complete industrial IoT ecosystem for remote metering, pressure monitoring and network control in water, gas and heat utility networks. The solution covers the entire chain from field sensors through cabinet-level controllers to a centralized cloud platform — all designed, manufactured and certified in the EU.
Why It Matters
EU water networks lose 26% of treated water before it reaches the customer. Aging infrastructure and manual readings cost utilities millions.
European water utilities lose up to 26% of treated water to non-revenue losses before it reaches the customer. The average pipe age in municipal networks exceeds 40 years, with many systems built in the 1970s–80s. The EU smart water market is projected to reach EUR 4.7 billion by 2028 (CAGR 12.3%, MarketsAndMarkets). Aging infrastructure and manual meter reading cost utilities millions in lost revenue, undetected leaks and regulatory non-compliance. The EU Water Framework Directive now mandates real-time monitoring by 2027.
The Problem
Utilities operate blind: manual reads, undetected leaks, no pressure data, zero audit trail.
Most utility operators today face three interconnected challenges. Undetected leaks cause EUR 9.1 billion in losses per year across EU networks due to physical losses in aging distribution pipes — most leaks run for months before discovery. Manual meter reading happens only one to two times per year in most CEE utilities, with billing based on estimates and no anomaly detection or real-time visibility. And 85% of EU municipal networks lack real-time pressure and flow monitoring, meaning decisions rely on complaints rather than data.
The Desired Outcome
From reactive firefighting to data-driven water management with hourly telemetry, instant alerts and full EU compliance.
VAD transforms reactive utility management into data-driven operations. Manual reads of one to two times per year become hourly telemetry with real billing data. Leaks found weeks to months late are replaced by alerts within minutes, shown on a map. No pressure or flow data at all gives way to live pressure and flow monitoring per DMA. Zero audit trail for regulators becomes a full digital EU-compliant trail. Target outcomes include NRW reduction to 15% or less within three years, leak detection response time under 30 minutes, meter read success rate of 99.5% and 100% EU directive compliance.
Solution Overview
One integrated ecosystem: smart devices, cellular IoT connectivity and VAD IIoT cloud platform — end-to-end from a single vendor.
The solution is built as one integrated ecosystem with three layers. Smart devices include the VADTel SENS pressure and temperature sensor, VADTel Metr USM-25 ultrasonic water meter and VADTel ValveLink DIN-rail controller. IoT connectivity operates over NB-IoT, GPRS and LoRa cellular networks. The VAD IIoT Ecosystem cloud platform provides analytics, alerts and shutoff control. The data flow runs from sensor through NB-IoT or GPRS to the VAD IIoT platform and on to dashboards and APIs — end-to-end from a single vendor.

Metering Node Cabinet
Complete field-deployed valve and telemetry assembly with all components in a single cabinet: ValveLink, GSM antenna, battery, compressor, manifold, position board, pressure sensors and RS-485 meters.
The metering node cabinet is a complete field-deployed assembly that integrates all components required for remote valve control and telemetry. Cabinet components include the ValveLink controller, GSM antenna for cellular uplink, 12/24V battery supply, pneumatic drive compressor, solenoid valve manifold, actuator position board for stem sensing, upstream and downstream pressure sensors, and RS-485 external metering devices. Typical deployment scenarios include gas nodes, water chambers, district-heating substations and remote valve stations.
Cloud Platform
VAD IIoT Ecosystem
The VAD IIoT Ecosystem is a centralized cloud platform for monitoring, control and analytics across the entire deployed fleet. The platform currently manages over 12,890 metering nodes and over 9,640 consumers, with multi-tenant architecture and role-based access control. Four core pillars: fleet status dashboard, trend analytics and historical data, valve operations control, and compliance data reports.
Metering data analysis and device health tracking: calendar heatmaps, session statistics, voltage trends and lifespan forecast.
Analytics and Monitoring
The platform provides comprehensive metering data analysis and device health tracking. Capabilities include calendar heatmap views of metering readings, communication session statistics, battery voltage monitoring and lifespan forecasting, and historical data archives. Configurable alerts cover low battery, missed sessions, abnormal readings and tamper detection.
External Interfaces and SCADA
The platform integrates with external SCADA systems for GTS monitoring, map-based visualization and live pressure data. The GTS map view displays stations geographically with real-time temperature and pressure charts. The GTS pipeline scheme shows network topology with live pressure readings at each node. Integration protocols include OPC UA, Modbus TCP, REST API and MQTT broker. Data export is available in CSV, JSON and XML formats with real-time streaming to third-party systems.
Remote Shutoff Control
The platform provides full remote valve control with diagnostics and maintenance tracking. Operators can issue open and close commands, schedule shutoffs, trigger emergency stops and monitor position feedback in real time. The diagnostics module tracks valve drive health, limit switch status and response time. A complete audit trail logs every command with its timestamp, result and origin. Service history records all maintenance events with date, job description and executor.
