Smart Water Metering — Industrial IoT Solution
VAD Water Metering Solution — industrial IoT for water utilities. Ultrasonic smart meters, pressure sensors, remote valve control and the IIoT Platform from a single EU manufacturer.
The solution covers the full chain from field sensors through cabinet-level controllers to the IIoT Platform, with SCADA integration on the back end. Designed, manufactured and certified in the EU. The same architecture serves water, gas, heat and industrial deployments.
Why It Matters
Three pressures are reshaping water distribution. Non-revenue water (NRW) keeps climbing: European utilities lose up to 26% of treated water before it reaches the consumer (EurEau). Distribution networks are aging — average pipe age in municipal systems exceeds 40 years, much of it laid in the 1970s and 80s. EU regulation is tightening: the Drinking Water Directive (EU) 2020/2184 introduces new monitoring obligations, stricter pollutant controls and more frequent digital reporting from 2027. The EU smart water market is projected to reach EUR 4.7 billion by 2028 (CAGR 12.3%, MarketsAndMarkets).
The Problem
Utilities operate blind: manual reads, undetected leaks, no pressure data, zero audit trail.
Operators face three problems at once. Physical losses in aging pipes cost EU networks EUR 9.1 billion every year, and most leaks run for months before anyone notices. Manual meter reading still happens one to two times per year across most CEE utilities — bills rest on estimates, anomalies go undetected, and operators have no real-time visibility. Across the EU, 85% of municipal networks run without real-time pressure or flow monitoring at all, so dispatch decisions follow consumer complaints rather than telemetry.
The Desired Outcome
From reactive firefighting to data-driven water management — hourly telemetry, alerts in minutes, a full EU-compliant audit trail.
VAD turns reactive utility management into a data-driven operation. Annual manual reads become hourly telemetry with billing-grade data. Leaks discovered weeks or months late become map-located alerts within minutes. Missing pressure and flow data becomes live monitoring per District Metered Area (DMA). The missing audit trail becomes a complete, EU-compliant digital record.
Solution Architecture
One ecosystem: smart devices, IoT connectivity and the IIoT Platform — end-to-end from a single vendor.
The VAD IIoT Ecosystem runs in three layers. Smart devices include the VADTel-SENS pressure and temperature sensor, VADTel-WUSM-25 ultrasonic water meter and VADTel-ValveLink DIN-rail controller. Connectivity runs over GPRS, NB-IoT and LoRaWAN. The IIoT Platform handles analytics, alerts and valve control. Data flows from the sensor through NB-IoT or GPRS to the IIoT Platform and onward to dashboards and APIs.

Metering Node Assembly
Complete field-deployed valve and telemetry kit — every component required for remote water metering and valve control in a single cabinet.
The kit contains the VADTel-ValveLink controller, GSM antenna for cellular uplink, 12/24 V battery supply, pneumatic compressor, solenoid valve manifold, actuator position board for stem sensing, upstream and downstream pressure sensors, and RS-485 external metering devices. Typical deployments include water chambers, district reduction points, district-heating substations, gas distribution nodes and remote valve stations.
Water IIoT Cloud Platform
IIoT Platform
The IIoT Platform is the cloud component of the VAD IIoT Ecosystem — a single environment for monitoring, control and analytics across the deployed fleet. It currently manages 12,890+ metering nodes and 9,640+ consumers, with multi-tenant architecture and role-based access control. Four core pillars: fleet status dashboard, trend analytics and historical data, valve operations, and compliance reports.
Analytics and Monitoring
The platform handles metering data analysis and device health tracking in one view: calendar heatmaps of metering readings, communication-session statistics, battery voltage monitoring with lifespan forecasting, and historical-data archives. Configurable alerts cover low battery, missed sessions, abnormal readings and tamper events.
External Interfaces and SCADA
The platform integrates with external SCADA systems for Gas Transportation System (GTS) monitoring, map-based visualization and live pressure data. The GTS map view places stations on a geographic map with real-time temperature and pressure charts. The GTS pipeline scheme renders network topology with live pressure readings at each node. Integration protocols include OPC UA, Modbus TCP, REST API and MQTT. The platform exports data in CSV, JSON and XML, and streams to third-party systems in real time.
Remote Shutoff Control
The platform delivers remote valve control with diagnostics and maintenance tracking. Operators issue open and close commands, schedule shutoffs, trigger emergency stops and watch position feedback in real time. The diagnostics module tracks valve drive health, limit switch status and response time. A complete audit trail logs every command with its timestamp, result and origin. Service history records each maintenance event with date, job description and executor.
Use Cases
The VAD IIoT Ecosystem serves four utility sectors from a single platform.
Gas metering — volume correctors, remote shutoff valves, cabinet telemetry, leak and tamper alerts.
Water supply — ultrasonic meters, pressure monitoring, consumption analytics, loss detection.
District heating — heat calculators, valve-station control, substation telemetry, temperature tracking.
Industrial — hydraulic systems, pneumatic networks, boiler-room sensors, compressor control.
